I guess as long as we keep shooting each other, I have to keep painting this image. This is "American Pieta #2" A pieta is an image of Mary mourning over the body of Jesus. My painting sees the Christs who are dying on our streets. Acrylic on canvas, 24" x 30", shadowboxed behind a pierced sheet of plexiglass.
It was when listening to the video taken by Philando Castile’s partner, hearing the panicked police officer’s screams that I heard the maddened crowd in Jerusalem calling “crucify! crucify!” regardless of Jesus’ guilt or crime. Every black death is a crucifixion committed to ensure the empire’s hegemony. And so I saw Philando Castile draped across a contemporary Mary’s knee.
So that is what I painted. But also more than just Philando Castile. I painted a black figure lying across the lap of a Mary clad in a light blue track suit. It is a non-specific figure, representing not just Castile but all of the horrific shooting deaths of black men that have become too commonplace in our society. The scene is place behind a shattered piece of plexiglass pierced with bullet holes. You can only see the scene of the painting through the screen of the debris of the shootings.
I wish this piece had quickly faded into irrelevance, but our culture's addiction to violence keeps it all too fresh.

This is a piece that begins to move beyond 2 dimensions. Inspired by the welcome sign at a spiritual retreat center in Kansas, it is perfect for your personal altar.
First Moravian Church in Raleigh NC held an "Art for Lent" program in the Spring of 2016. My piece was selected for the 5th SUnday of Lent and is based on the scripture from Isaiah 43 that declares that waters will flow in the desert. It is a 30" x30" triptych.
Inspiration comes from some pretty unexpected quarters. A friend from way back saw my artwork and asked if I was able to do a painting in a deep purple. I answered that should be able to, since I've been listening to Deep Purple since I was a teenager (now that is a loooong time!). I said it as a joke but then I got to actually thinking about it. I dug out some old cassette tapes and cranked up the volume. Here is the Deep Purple series!
I have been creating digital art for more than 20 years. My first home computer was a used Amiga 500 and it was the on that antique that I first delved into the world of art created in virtuo. Today I use either a Wacom tablet, or more often the great apps available on the Ipad. These works were created on an Ipad, using either Artrage or Sketchbook Pro.They are available to purchase as giclee prints in practically any size. Inquire for prices of larger prints.
